Not everyone books gas through an app. In a lot of homes, the person who handles the cylinder has a basic keypad phone, or a smartphone with no data pack, or simply doesn’t want to deal with apps and passwords. For them, the best way to book a refill is also the oldest: a phone call, or even just a missed call.
All three companies still support both, and a missed call is honestly the quickest booking method there is. You dial, it rings once, the call cuts itself, and an SMS arrives confirming your booking. No internet, no typing, nothing to remember except one number.
The Numbers You Need
| Company | Missed call | IVRS phone call | SMS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indane | 84549 55555 | 77189 55555 | REFILL to 77189 55555 |
| HP Gas | 94936 02222 | 88888 23456 (press 1) | BOOK to 88888 23456 or 94936 02222 |
| Bharat Gas | 77109 55555 | 77150 12345 or 77180 12345 | LPG to 77150 12345 or 77180 12345 |
These are all-India numbers. They work the same whether you’re in Ludhiana, Lucknow or Chennai.
The Golden Rule: Call From Your Registered Number

None of these methods ask for your name, address or consumer number during an ordinary booking. The company’s system recognises your connection from the phone number you’re calling from. That’s what makes a missed call possible in the first place.
It also means a call from any other phone simply doesn’t work. If you give a missed call from your son’s phone, or from a new SIM you got last year, nothing happens.
If you’re not sure which number is registered, check your last cash memo or ask your distributor. And if your registered number is one you no longer use, update it first. Every method on this page depends on it.
Booking by Missed Call
This is the one to teach parents and grandparents.
- From your registered mobile, dial your company’s missed call number from the table above.
- Let it ring. The call disconnects on its own, and you’re not charged for it.
- Within a few minutes, you’ll get an SMS confirming the booking.
That’s it. Bharat Gas describes it exactly this way: no apps, no internet, just a missed call from your registered number, and the refill booking is placed automatically.
If no SMS comes, don’t keep calling again and again. Wait a little, then check the section on problems further down.
Indane’s missed call number does one more thing
IndianOil’s 84549 55555 isn’t only for refills. According to the government’s announcement when the facility was expanded in 2021, people who want a new Indane connection can also give a missed call on the same number to start the process. Someone from the company follows up with you.
Booking by Phone Call (IVRS)
IVRS is the automated phone menu: a recorded voice asks you to press numbers on your keypad. It takes a minute longer than a missed call, but some people prefer hearing the confirmation over waiting for an SMS.
Indane: 77189 55555
This is Indane’s single booking number for the whole country. Since November 2020, it has replaced the old circle-wise numbers that used to differ from state to state.
- First time using it? The IVRS asks you to register your mobile number by entering your 16-digit Indane consumer ID, which starts with 7, and then authenticate in the same call. You’ll find the consumer ID on your recent cash memo or in the IndianOil ONE app.
- After that, call, confirm your consumer ID when asked, and follow the prompts to book.
HP Gas: 88888 23456
Call and follow the voice instructions. HP’s own guidance is to press 1 to book your refill.
Bharat Gas: 77150 12345 or 77180 12345
Call either number and follow the voice menu to book.
Booking by SMS
SMS works on any phone, including the most basic keypad model, and doesn’t need internet.
- Indane: type REFILL and send to 77189 55555
- HP Gas: type BOOK and send to 88888 23456 or 94936 02222
- Bharat Gas: type LPG and send to 77150 12345 or 77180 12345
Normal SMS charges apply, if your plan charges for SMS at all.
Careful With Old Numbers
Many kitchens still have an old sticker or a number painted on the wall near the cylinder from years ago, and many phones still have an old “Gas booking” contact saved. Some of those numbers have been retired. Indane, for instance, discontinued its telecom circle-specific booking numbers after 31 October 2020 and moved everyone to 77189 55555.
Delete the old contact, save the current number from the table above, and if there’s an old number on your wall, update it.
Making It Easy for Elderly Parents
A few small things that help a lot:
- Save the missed call number under a name they’ll recognise, like “GAS BOOKING”, in capital letters.
- Put it on speed dial if their phone allows.
- Write it on a piece of paper and stick it on the fridge or near the cylinder, along with the distributor’s number.
- Tell them what the confirmation SMS looks like, so they know the booking has gone through.
- Remind them about the delivery code. The short code that comes by SMS after booking should be given only to the delivery person at the door, never to someone who calls asking for it.
When It Doesn’t Work
No SMS after the missed call
Almost always, the call was made from a number that isn’t registered with the connection. Check which number is registered. If it’s the right number, check whether messages from the gas company are going into a spam or blocked folder.
“Booking already exists”
Someone has already booked a refill that hasn’t been delivered yet. On a single-cylinder connection, you can’t book another until it arrives.
Booking refused as too early
Domestic connections currently have a minimum gap between two refills: 25 days for most urban connections and 45 days in rural areas.
Indane IVRS keeps asking for registration
Have your 16-digit consumer ID ready before you call, and complete the registration and authentication in the same call.
The amount on the cash memo is higher than usual
From 1 October 2026, refills at the regulated price need biometric Aadhaar authentication (eKYC) to be completed on the connection. Without it, you’re charged the market price. Your distributor can tell you your eKYC status and how to complete it.
