How to Change the Name on Your LPG Gas Connection (Death, Family Transfer, Marriage)

In a lot of Indian homes, the gas connection is still in the name of someone who isn’t around any more. A father who passed away ten years ago, a grandmother, sometimes a previous tenant. The family carries on booking refills from the same phone number, the cylinder keeps coming, and nobody thinks about the name on the Subscription Voucher.

That has quietly worked for years. From 1 October 2026, it stops working so smoothly, and this guide explains why, and how to get the connection into the right name.

Why This Matters Now

From 1 October 2026, buying refills at the regulated price needs biometric Aadhaar authentication (eKYC) to be completed on the connection. That authentication is of the connection holder: their face or fingerprint, matched against their Aadhaar.

If the connection holder has passed away, that’s impossible. And without eKYC, you’ll be charged the market price for every refill instead of the regulated one.

There are other reasons too. Any subsidy follows the connection holder’s Aadhaar and bank account, so for an Ujjwala family, the ₹300 can’t reach the right person. And every future change, from a transfer when you move house to a deposit refund when you surrender, is harder when the person named on the papers isn’t there to sign.

When the Connection Holder Has Passed Away

This is the most common case. HP Gas’s official FAQ lists what’s needed to transfer the connection to a family member after the holder’s death. Indane and Bharat Gas distributors may word things a little differently, so check the exact list at your agency, but expect something like this:

  • An application with the details of the connection and the family member taking it over
  • The death certificate of the connection holder
  • A legal heir certificate. If you don’t have one, HP accepts a declaration on plain paper instead
  • A No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the other legal heirs, confirming they’re fine with the connection going to you
  • A completed KYC form for the new holder, with proof of identity and proof of address
  • The original Subscription Voucher (SV). If it’s lost, you’ll need an affidavit in the company’s format

A few practical tips

  • Don’t wait for a legal heir certificate if getting one would take months. Ask your distributor whether a declaration will do. HP explicitly allows it.
  • Get the NOC signed early. If your siblings live in other cities, a signed NOC with a copy of each person’s ID usually works. Sort it out before you visit the agency, not after.
  • Carry several photocopies of the death certificate. You’ll need them for the bank, insurance and other paperwork anyway.

Transferring to a Family Member While the Holder Is Alive

Maybe your father wants the connection in your name, or a parent is moving in with another sibling. HP Gas allows a transfer within the family, specifically to a father, mother, brother, sister, son, daughter or spouse.

What’s needed, according to HP’s FAQ:

  • Written consent from the current SV holder, in the company’s prescribed format
  • A declaration from the family member taking over the connection
  • A completed KYC form for the new holder, with proof of identity and address
  • The original SV, or a declaration in the company’s format if it’s been lost

The simplest way to do this is to go to the distributor together, with both people’s documents. If the current holder can’t come, get their signed consent ready before you go.

What Happens to Your Deposit and SV

Nothing is lost. HP’s FAQ says the deposit stays the same as on the original SV. Behind the scenes, the distributor closes the old record and issues a new SV in the new holder’s name for the same deposit amount.

Keep that new SV safe. It’s now the document every future change depends on.

Changing Your Name After Marriage

If the connection is in your maiden name and you’ve since changed your surname, the connection doesn’t have to be transferred. It only needs updating.

  1. Update your Aadhaar first. eKYC matches your Aadhaar, so the name on the connection should match the name on your Aadhaar.
  2. Take your updated ID proof and an official record of the name change, such as your marriage certificate or a published name-change notice, to the distributor.
  3. Ask them to update the name on your connection. They’ll tell you if they need an affidavit as well.

There’s no rule that says you must change the name after marriage. If you’ve kept your name on Aadhaar, there’s nothing to update.

Correcting a Spelling Mistake

Small spelling errors, like a missing letter or a mixed-up initial, are common in older connections. They matter more now, because eKYC and DBT compare the name on your connection with the name on your Aadhaar and bank account.

Take an ID proof with the correct spelling, ideally your Aadhaar, and ask the distributor to correct the record. For a genuine typo, this is usually a simple fix at the counter.

If You’re Not Family

A gas connection doesn’t come with the house. If you’ve moved into a flat and the previous tenant left their connection behind, or you’ve bought a house where the seller’s connection is still running, you can’t take it over. The family transfer rules cover close relatives only.

The right route is for the original holder to surrender the connection and collect their deposit, and for you to take a new connection in your own name.

What About Ujjwala Connections?

Connections under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana are issued in the name of an adult woman of the household. If an Ujjwala connection needs to be transferred, particularly after the beneficiary’s death, ask your distributor about the rules for your case before you gather documents, since they can differ from a regular connection.

After the Name Is Changed

A few things to do straight away:

  • Complete eKYC in the new holder’s name. Without it, refills won’t come at the regulated price from 1 October 2026.
  • Check the registered mobile number. If it was the old holder’s number and nobody uses it now, update it.
  • For Ujjwala families, make sure the new holder’s bank account is seeded with Aadhaar for DBT, so the subsidy reaches them.
  • Keep the new SV and your consumer card somewhere safe, with a photo of each on your phone.

Quick Answers

Can I keep using a gas connection in my late father’s name?
You’ll still get cylinders, but from 1 October 2026, refills at the regulated price need eKYC by the connection holder, which isn’t possible. Transfer it to a legal heir.

Do I have to pay a new deposit when the connection moves to my name?
No. The deposit stays at the amount on the original SV, and a new SV is issued in your name.

What if I don’t have a legal heir certificate?
HP Gas accepts a declaration on plain paper instead. Check with your distributor.

Can I transfer the connection to my friend or tenant?
No. Transfers are allowed only within close family. Anyone else needs a new connection.

The original SV is lost. Can I still transfer?
Yes, with an affidavit or declaration in the company’s format instead of the SV.

Do It Before the Next Refill

If the name on your gas connection belongs to someone who has passed away, or to anyone who isn’t the person actually using it, this is the month to fix it. Gather the death certificate, the other heirs’ NOC, your KYC documents and the SV, and it’s usually one visit to the distributor.

HP Gas sets out its transfer rules in its official FAQ. If your distributor asked for something different, let us know. It helps us keep this guide accurate.
