How to Surrender Your LPG Gas Connection and Get Your Deposit Back

There comes a point when you no longer need your LPG connection. You’re moving abroad, your building has switched to piped gas, two households have merged into one, or an elderly parent who held the connection has passed away. In each case, there’s a deposit sitting with the gas company that belongs to you, and surrendering the connection properly is how you get it back.

The process is simple, but a few details decide how much you get back and how quickly. This guide covers them all.

First: Do You Really Need to Surrender?

Surrendering closes your connection for good. Depending on your situation, one of these might suit you better:

If You Now Have Piped Gas, Surrender Is Compulsory

Under a government direction issued in March 2026, anyone with a piped natural gas (PNG) connection is not allowed to keep a domestic LPG connection, and cannot take a new one.

So if your building or colony has moved to PNG and you’ve taken the connection, surrendering your LPG connection isn’t a choice. Do it soon after your PNG supply starts. You get your deposit back either way.

What You Get Back

When you surrender, the distributor refunds the deposit amount written on your Subscription Voucher (SV). That covers:

  • The cylinder security deposit, for each cylinder you return
  • The pressure regulator deposit

For a connection taken today, those deposits are ₹2,200 per cylinder and ₹250 for the regulator in most of India, or ₹2,000 and ₹200 in the North-Eastern states.

Why your refund might be less than you expect

The refund is what’s on your SV, not today’s rate. If your family took the connection years ago, when deposits were lower, that lower amount is what comes back. People are often surprised by this at the counter, but it’s how the rule works.

The amount can also be reduced by any pending dues on the connection, or if equipment is missing or damaged.

What to Return and What to Carry

Return at the counter

  • The cylinder, or both cylinders if you have a double-cylinder connection
  • The pressure regulator

Carry with you

  • The original Subscription Voucher
  • Your consumer card (the Domestic Gas Consumer Card)
  • ID proof, usually Aadhaar
  • Bank account details, such as a cancelled cheque or passbook copy, in case the refund is credited to your account
  • A passport-size photograph, just in case
  • Your last cash memo, which has your consumer number

If you might want an LPG connection again somewhere else, ask the distributor to endorse your consumer card rather than keep it. HP Gas advises customers who are moving not to surrender the card, since it can be used at the new location.

How to Surrender, Step by Step

  1. Use up the gas. Time your last refill so the cylinder is nearly empty when you return it.
  2. Go to your distributor with the cylinder, regulator and documents. The connection holder should go if possible.
  3. Fill in the surrender form at the counter.
  4. Hand over the cylinder and regulator. The staff check them and your SV.
  5. Collect your paperwork: the Termination Voucher (TV), and a receipt showing the refund amount.
  6. Collect the refund, or confirm when and how it will be paid. Ask whether it’s paid at the counter or credited to your bank account, and note the date they give you.

Starting online

You can often start the surrender request online, through your gas company’s app or website. HP Gas lists “initiate surrender” among the services in its HP Pay app. But the cylinder and regulator still have to go back to the distributor, so expect at least one visit.

Keep the Termination Voucher

Don’t throw away the TV once you have your refund. According to HP Gas, a Termination Voucher is valid for one year, and it lets you get a new connection at another place by paying the same deposit amount. If there’s any chance you’ll need LPG again within a year, perhaps after a move, it saves you starting from scratch.

Special Situations

The original SV is lost

You can still surrender. Instead of the SV, you give a declaration of loss in the company’s own format. HP Gas and Bharat Gas both have standard formats for this, and your distributor will have the right one.

The connection holder has passed away

A family member can surrender the connection and collect the refund. Expect to need the death certificate and, usually, the same papers as for a transfer to a legal heir: proof that you’re the legal heir, or a declaration, and a no-objection letter from the other heirs.

It’s an Ujjwala connection

Under Ujjwala, the deposit was paid by the government, not by you. Before you return anything, ask your distributor how a surrender works for your connection and what, if anything, is refunded.

The regulator is missing

Without the regulator, you won’t get the regulator deposit back, and the distributor may ask you to sign a declaration that it was lost. HP Gas, for example, has a standard undertaking form for a lost regulator or cylinder.

If the Refund Doesn’t Come

Keep your surrender receipt and TV safe. Those are your proof. If the refund isn’t paid by the date you were given:

  1. Go back to the distributor with the receipt.
  2. Call the LPG toll-free helpline, 1800 2333 555, or raise a complaint in your company’s app.
  3. If it’s still not resolved, escalate to the company’s grievance officers, and then to CPGRAMS, the government’s grievance portal.

Quick Answers

How much refund do I get when I surrender a gas connection?
The deposit written on your Subscription Voucher, for each cylinder and the regulator, less any dues or charges for missing or damaged equipment.

Do I get today’s deposit rate back?
No. You get the amount on your SV, which may be lower if the connection is old.

Can I surrender without the original SV?
Yes, with a declaration of loss in the company’s format.

I’ve taken a PNG connection. Do I have to surrender my LPG?
Yes. Since March 2026, households with PNG can’t keep a domestic LPG connection.

Is the Termination Voucher useful after surrender?
Yes. It’s valid for a year and lets you reconnect elsewhere by paying the same deposit.

Can I surrender online?
You can usually start the request online, but you’ll still need to return the cylinder and regulator at the distributor.

Close It Cleanly

Use up the gas, take the cylinder, regulator, SV and your ID to the distributor, and don’t leave without the Termination Voucher and a refund receipt. Done that way, surrendering a connection takes one visit, and the deposit that’s been sitting with the gas company for years comes back to you.

HP Gas explains the Termination Voucher and deposit refund in its official FAQ. If your distributor asked for something different, let us know. Practices vary a little between agencies.
