PM Ujjwala Yojana 2026: Who Can Apply, Documents and How to Get a Free LPG Connection

For a poor household still cooking on wood, cow dung or kerosene, the upfront cost of a gas connection has always been the real barrier. The refills are manageable. It’s the ₹2,000-plus in deposits, the regulator, the pipe and the stove that keep families from switching.

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) removes that barrier. An eligible woman gets a complete LPG connection without paying a deposit, along with the first cylinder and a stove, free. More than 10.5 crore connections have been given out under the scheme so far. This guide explains who qualifies, what you get, the documents you need, and how to apply.

What You Get Under Ujjwala

According to the official PMUY website, the government provides assistance of ₹2,050 for each 14.2 kg connection (₹1,300 for a 5 kg connection). That covers:

ItemCovered by the scheme
Cylinder security deposit₹1,700
Pressure regulator₹150
LPG hose₹100
Installation charges₹75
Consumer card₹25
Total₹2,050

On top of that, every Ujjwala beneficiary gets the first refill and a stove (hotplate) free of cost.

After the connection, there’s continuing help too. Ujjwala families get a targeted subsidy of ₹300 per 14.2 kg cylinder, credited to their bank account, on the first four refills of each financial year. This was cut from nine refills to four in June 2026.

Who Can Apply

The official PMUY website lists three conditions. The applicant must be:

  1. A woman aged 18 or above. The connection is always issued in a woman’s name.
  2. From a household with no existing LPG connection from any oil company. Not in her name, and not in any other family member’s name.
  3. From a poor household, which she confirms by submitting a Deprivation Declaration, a form with set criteria that describe a poor household.

That second condition is where most applications get stuck. If your husband, father-in-law or anyone else in the same household already has a gas connection, even an old one nobody uses, the household isn’t eligible.

Is the Scheme Open Right Now?

Ujjwala connections are released in phases, as the government approves them. In September 2023, the Cabinet approved 75 lakh additional connections for 2023-24 to 2025-26. In September 2025, a further 25 lakh connections were announced for 2025-26. The official PMUY site showed about 10.57 crore connections released as of 23 September 2026.

Whether new applications are being taken when you apply depends on the phase in progress. The quickest way to find out is to ask your nearest gas distributor, or check the PMUY portal.

Documents You Need

The official list:

  • KYC form, available at the distributor or on the portal
  • Aadhaar card of the applicant
  • Proof of address, needed only if you live somewhere other than the address on your Aadhaar
  • Ration card issued by the state you’re applying from, or another state government document showing your family members
  • Bank account details: a copy of the passbook or a cancelled cheque. Use an account in the applicant’s own name.
  • Deprivation Declaration

If you’re a migrant family

Families who have moved to another state for work often don’t have a local ration card. The scheme allows migrants to submit a self-declaration in the prescribed format (Annexure I) instead. Ask your distributor for the form.

How to Apply Online

  1. Go to the official PMUY website.
  2. Choose the oil company you want: Indane, Bharat Gas or HP Gas. You’ll be taken to that company’s portal.
  3. Select your state, district and the distributor nearest to you.
  4. Fill in the application with the applicant’s details, and upload the documents listed above.
  5. Submit, and note down your application or reference number.
  6. The distributor verifies your documents and contacts you to complete the process.

Choose a distributor that’s close to your home. You’ll be dealing with them for every refill for years.

How to Apply at the Distributor

If you don’t have internet or aren’t comfortable with forms online, you can apply in person at any LPG distributor.

  1. Take the documents listed above, with photocopies.
  2. Ask for the Ujjwala KYC form and the Deprivation Declaration, and fill them in. The staff can help.
  3. Submit everything and ask for an acknowledgement.

The applicant herself should go if possible, since her Aadhaar authentication is part of the process.

After You Apply

  • Verification. The distributor checks your documents and makes sure there’s no other connection in the household.
  • Connection release. You get your cylinder, regulator, hose, stove and first refill, along with the consumer card and connection papers.
  • Installation. The distributor’s mechanic sets it up and shows you how to use it safely.
  • eKYC. Make sure biometric Aadhaar authentication is completed on the connection. From 1 October 2026, it’s needed to buy refills at the regulated price with the subsidy.
  • Bank seeding. For the ₹300 subsidy to reach you, your bank account must be linked with your Aadhaar for DBT. Ask your bank to confirm.

What You’ll Pay After the First Cylinder

The connection and the first refill are free, but later refills are paid for.

You pay the normal price at the door, which is ₹942 in Delhi right now, and then ₹300 comes back into your bank account for each of the first four refills in the year. That makes the effective price about ₹642 for those four cylinders in Delhi. From the fifth refill in the same year, there’s no ₹300 credit.

The count resets every 1 April.

Choosing a 5 kg Cylinder Instead

Ujjwala connections are also available with a smaller 5 kg cylinder, with ₹1,300 of assistance. It’s lighter to carry and each refill costs less, which some families find easier to manage. The subsidy on 5 kg cylinders is given in proportion to the smaller size. Ask the distributor which option suits your household.

Common Reasons Applications Get Stuck

  • Someone in the household already has an LPG connection. This is the most common reason by far.
  • The applicant isn’t a woman aged 18 or above.
  • Documents don’t match, for example different names on the Aadhaar and the ration card.
  • The bank account isn’t in the applicant’s own name.
  • The application went to a distributor that doesn’t serve your area.

Beware of Agents

An Ujjwala connection is free. Nobody should charge you for the form, the application, the connection or the first refill. If someone offers to “get your Ujjwala connection sanctioned” for a fee, or asks for your Aadhaar OTP over the phone, walk away. Apply only through the official portal or directly at a gas distributor.

For help with the scheme, the official PMUY website lists the Ujjwala helpline 14438. For gas leaks and emergencies, the number is always 1906.
