How to Transfer Your LPG Gas Connection: Same City or Another City

When you’re shifting house, the gas connection is usually the last thing anyone thinks about. The packers are booked, the new rent agreement is signed, and then someone asks, “What do we do with the cylinder?” usually the night before the tempo arrives.

The good news is that you don’t need a new connection just because you’ve moved. The process depends on how far you’re going, and once you know which case you’re in, it’s mostly one visit to your current distributor and one to the new one.

First, Work Out Which Kind of Move This Is

Your moveWhat you needCylinder and regulatorDeposit
Within your current distributor’s areaJust an address updateKeep themNo change
Same city or nearby town, different distributorA transfer authorisation from your current distributorKeep them and take them with youNo change
Another city or stateA Termination Voucher (TV)Surrender themRefunded, then paid again at the new place
Switching to a different oil companySurrender, then a new connectionSurrender themRefunded, then a fresh deposit

Let’s go through each.

Moving Within the Same Distributor’s Area

If your new home is still inside the area your current distributor delivers to, you don’t need a transfer at all. Tell the distributor you’ve moved, give them proof of your new address, and ask them to update it on your connection.

Do this before your next booking. Otherwise the delivery person goes to your old address, and you spend a day on the phone sorting it out.

Moving Within the Same City, to a Different Distributor

This is the most common case, and it’s simpler than people expect. You keep your cylinder and regulator and simply move to a new distributor.

HP Gas describes the process like this in its official FAQ, and the other two companies follow the same idea:

  1. Go to your current distributor with your original Subscription Voucher (SV).
  2. They issue a transfer authorisation. HP Gas calls it an e-CTA (e-Customer Transfer Advice), which is an authorisation code linked to your SV.
  3. Take your SV with the authorisation code to the new distributor.
  4. The new distributor enrols you, endorses your SV and hands the original back to you.

HP says the authorisation is valid for three months from the date it’s issued, so don’t sit on it.

Your cylinder and regulator stay with you throughout. You carry them to your new home yourself.

Doing it online

All three companies also let you switch to another distributor of the same company through their websites or apps. This is called portability. You log in, see the distributors that serve your area (often with ratings for their delivery and service), and request the one you want. HP Gas has a portability option in its HP Pay app.

Switching distributor within the same company shouldn’t cost you a transfer fee or a fresh deposit.

Carrying the cylinder across town

Since you’re moving the cylinder yourself, a few precautions:

  • Remove the regulator and put the safety cap back on the valve.
  • Keep the cylinder upright. Don’t lay it down in an auto or tempo.
  • Don’t pack it inside a closed box or bury it under furniture.
  • If you can time it, move when the cylinder is close to empty.

Moving to Another City or State

Here the process changes. You don’t carry the cylinder to the new city. You hand it back, collect a document called a Termination Voucher (TV), and use that to get reconnected at the other end.

At your current distributor

  1. Surrender your cylinder (or both, if you have a double-cylinder connection) and the regulator.
  2. You get a Termination Voucher, and the deposit amount written on your SV is refunded to you.
  3. Keep your Domestic Gas Consumer Card. HP specifically says not to surrender it, because it can be endorsed and used at the new location.

According to HP, the TV is valid for one year from the date it’s issued. That gives you time to settle in before you reconnect.

At the new city

  1. Go to a distributor of the same company that serves your new address.
  2. Take the TV, your consumer card, ID proof and proof of your new address.
  3. Pay the deposit. HP’s FAQ says reconnection at the new place is available by paying the same deposit amount. Ask the new distributor to confirm the figure before you pay.
  4. You get a new connection with a new consumer number. Save it, because your old one won’t work any more.
  5. Complete eKYC on the new connection, if it isn’t done at the counter. From 1 October 2026, that’s needed to buy refills at the regulated price.

A thing about the refund amount

The refund is the deposit written on your SV, not today’s deposit rate. If your family took the connection years ago, when deposits were lower, you’ll get that lower amount back. That surprises people at the counter, but it’s how it works.

It also means the TV is worth holding on to. It’s what lets you reconnect without starting from scratch.

Try to empty the cylinder first

You surrender the cylinder as it is. If you can, plan your last refill so it’s nearly empty when you hand it back, rather than returning a cylinder that’s still half full.

Switching to a Different Oil Company

Portability, as it has worked so far, is between distributors of the same company. If you want to move from, say, Indane to HP Gas, the route is to surrender your current connection, collect your deposit refund, and take a fresh connection with the other company at its current deposit rate.

That may change. In September 2025, the regulator PNGRB proposed allowing consumers to switch between oil companies without giving up their connection, much like mobile number portability. If it’s been rolled out by the time you read this, your distributor will know.

Moving Into a Home With Piped Gas?

Check this before you transfer anything.

Under a government direction issued in March 2026, anyone with a piped natural gas (PNG) connection is not allowed to keep a domestic LPG connection, and cannot take a new one. A separate order issued the same month allows households in areas where PNG is available to be asked, in writing, to switch to it. If they don’t apply, LPG supply to that household may stop three months after the notice.

So if your new building already has a PNG line, transferring your LPG connection there may not make sense. Surrendering it and getting your deposit back could be the better option.

Documents to Carry

  • Your original Subscription Voucher
  • Your Domestic Gas Consumer Card
  • ID proof, usually Aadhaar
  • Proof of your new address: a rent agreement, utility bill, or updated Aadhaar
  • Your last cash memo, which has your consumer number and distributor details
  • The transfer authorisation or Termination Voucher, depending on your case
  • A couple of passport-size photographs, just in case

What Usually Goes Wrong

The SV is missing

Nothing moves without it. If you can’t find your original SV, you’ll need a duplicate before you can transfer, so start on that first.

The connection is in a family member’s name

If it’s in a parent’s name and they’ve passed away, or it’s in someone else’s name who isn’t moving with you, get the name changed before the transfer. Transferring first and fixing the name later only doubles the paperwork.

The TV was left too long

A TV is valid for a year. If yours has expired, talk to a distributor at the new place about your options. You may end up applying as a new connection.

No distributor of your company serves the new area

It happens in newly developed areas. Your choice then is to wait, or to surrender and take a connection with a company that does serve the area.

Quick Answers

Do I have to pay a new deposit when I move within the same city?
No. You keep your cylinder and regulator, and your deposit stays as it is.

How long is a Termination Voucher valid?
HP Gas says one year from the date of issue.

Will my consumer number change?
If you move to another city, yes. You get a new consumer number at the new distributor.

Can I take my cylinder with me to another city?
The standard process is to surrender it at your current distributor and reconnect at the new city using the Termination Voucher.

Can I switch from Indane to HP Gas without surrendering?
Not through portability as it has worked so far, which is only between distributors of the same company. The regulator proposed allowing switches between companies in 2025, so ask your distributor whether that’s available yet.

Before the Tempo Arrives

Work out which of the four cases you’re in, visit your current distributor with your SV a week before the move, and keep every voucher they give you somewhere you won’t pack by mistake. For a move within the city, you’ll be cooking in your new kitchen on day one. For a move to another city, the Termination Voucher is what gets you reconnected there without starting from zero.

HP’s own FAQ page covers the transfer rules in its own words if you want to check them. And if your distributor asked for something different, let us know. Practice does vary from agency to agency.
