Getting a new LPG connection is one of those things you do once every few years: moving to a new city, setting up your first rented flat, or finally getting your own connection after years of sharing the family one. Because you do it so rarely, nobody remembers the process, and the distributor’s counter usually assumes you already know.
This guide covers what it costs, which documents to carry, how to apply online and offline, and the handful of things that hold applications up.
First, Pick the Right Kind of Connection

Three choices to make before you apply.
Single or double cylinder
A single-cylinder connection gives you one cylinder. When it runs out, you book a refill and wait for it. A double-cylinder connection gives you a spare, so you swap to the second one and book at leisure.
If you live with family and cook every day, the double connection is worth the extra deposit. If you live alone, eat out often, or are only in a city for a year or two, single is fine.
Company: Indane, HP Gas or Bharat Gas
Prices are the same or within a rupee or two in any given city, so price isn’t the deciding factor. What matters is which distributor is closest to you and has the best delivery record in your area. Ask your neighbours which agency they use and how long refills take. That tells you more than any company comparison.
14.2 kg or the smaller 5 kg
The standard household cylinder is 14.2 kg. The 5 kg cylinder, sometimes sold as a Free Trade LPG or “Chhotu” cylinder, suits students, single working people and anyone without a permanent address. It’s easier to get since it needs only ID proof rather than address proof, but the price per kilo is higher than a 14.2 kg refill.
The rest of this guide is about the regular 14.2 kg domestic connection.
What It Costs
Most of the money you pay upfront is a refundable deposit, not a fee. You get it back if you ever surrender the connection.
| Item | Single cylinder | Double cylinder |
|---|---|---|
| Cylinder security deposit (refundable) | ₹2,200 | ₹4,400 |
| Pressure regulator deposit (refundable) | ₹250 | ₹250 |
| First refill | Current price in your city | Current price, per cylinder filled |
| Suraksha hose, installation, inspection, booklet | Small extra charges, vary by distributor | Same |
In the North-Eastern states the deposits are lower: ₹2,000 per cylinder and ₹200 for the regulator.
So for a single-cylinder connection in most of India, budget roughly ₹2,450 in deposits, plus the first refill (₹942 in Delhi right now), plus a few hundred rupees for the pipe and installation. Call it ₹3,700 to ₹4,000 all-in for most cities.
Things you may be pushed to buy
Some agencies bundle a stove, a lighter or a “safety kit” with a new connection and present it as compulsory. It isn’t. You need a stove, obviously, but you’re free to buy it wherever you like. The only items that should come from the distributor are the regulator and, ideally, the Suraksha hose, because those are safety parts and the distributor’s are certified.
If a distributor refuses to release your connection unless you buy a stove from them, that’s worth a complaint to the company.
Documents You Need
Carry originals and one photocopy of each:
- Identity proof: Aadhaar card, voter ID, PAN card, passport or driving licence
- Address proof: Aadhaar, voter ID, passport, ration card, a recent electricity, water or telephone bill, or a registered rent agreement
- A passport-size photograph
- Your Aadhaar number and bank account details, for linking the connection to Aadhaar and for any subsidy
- A mobile number that you’ll keep for years. This becomes your registered number, and every future booking depends on it.
You’ll also fill a KYC form, which the distributor gives you, and sign a declaration that nobody else in your household already has a domestic LPG connection.
If you live in a rented flat
Rented accommodation is the most common reason applications get stuck, because your Aadhaar may still show your home-town address. A registered rent agreement usually works as address proof. If yours is only on stamp paper and unregistered, some distributors accept it and some don’t, so call ahead and ask.
How to Apply Online
All three companies accept new connection requests through their apps and websites:
- Indane: the IndianOil ONE app or the Indane section of the IndianOil website
- HP Gas: the HP Pay app, which has a “new LPG connection” option, or the myHPGas website
- Bharat Gas: the Hello BPCL app or the Bharat Gas website
The general flow is the same across all three:
- Register with your mobile number.
- Choose “new connection” and select your state, district and the distributor you want.
- Fill in your details and upload your ID, address proof and photo.
- Submit, and note your application or reference number.
- The distributor verifies your documents and contacts you, usually to pay the deposit and schedule installation.
The government’s services portal also lists the new-connection service with links to each company, on the National Government Services Portal.
Applying online saves you a trip, but you’ll almost always still visit the distributor once, either to show originals or to pay, or they’ll come to you for installation.
How to Apply at the Distributor
Still the most common route, and often the quickest when your documents are in order.
- Walk in with your documents and photo.
- Fill in the KYC form at the counter.
- Pay the deposits. Ask for a receipt for each one. You’ll need these to get your deposit back one day.
- Collect your Subscription Voucher (SV). This is the single most important document for your connection. Keep the original somewhere safe and a photo on your phone.
- Get the installation done. Some distributors send a mechanic home. Others hand over the cylinder and regulator for you to take.
After You Get the Connection
A few things to do in the first week that save trouble later:
- Complete eKYC. From 1 October 2026, biometric Aadhaar authentication is needed to buy refills at the regulated price. A new connection is the easiest time to get it done, often at the counter itself.
- Save your consumer number and 17-digit LPG ID. You’ll need them for booking, subsidy checks and complaints.
- Save your distributor’s phone number, printed on the SV and on every cash memo.
- Save 1906, the national LPG emergency helpline, before you ever need it.
- Check the installation yourself. Regulator locked on properly, hose not touching the burner, cylinder standing upright on the floor.
Why Applications Get Delayed
Address proof doesn’t match where you live
The distributor delivers only within its own area. If your documents point to another city, expect questions. A local rent agreement or a utility bill in your name usually solves it.
Someone at the address already has a connection
One household, one domestic connection. If a previous tenant never surrendered theirs, or a family member at the same address has one, the system may flag your application. Separate kitchens in a joint family can be treated differently, so explain the situation at the counter.
You already hold a connection somewhere else
If you’re moving cities, you don’t need a new connection at all. You can transfer your existing one, which is cheaper since your deposit carries over. We cover that process in a separate guide.
The distributor has a waiting list
Rare now, but it still happens in some growing suburbs. Try another distributor of the same company or a different company in the same area.
Quick Answers
How long does it take to get a new connection?
With documents in order, usually within a week. Many distributors do it the same day if you walk in.
Is the ₹2,200 deposit refundable?
Yes, when you surrender the connection and return the cylinder, regulator and Subscription Voucher.
Can I get a connection without a permanent address?
The 5 kg Free Trade cylinder needs only ID proof, so it’s the usual option for people without local address proof.
Can I switch to a double cylinder later?
Yes. Apply at your distributor and pay the extra cylinder deposit.
Do I get a free connection under Ujjwala?
If you’re eligible for PMUY, the connection comes without the deposit. Eligibility and the application process are different from a regular connection and we cover them in their own guide.
Getting Started
Pick your distributor by asking neighbours, not by company name. Carry ID, local address proof, a photo and your Aadhaar and bank details. Expect to pay about ₹2,450 in refundable deposits plus your first refill. And keep your Subscription Voucher safe, because every future change to your connection depends on it.
Deposit amounts and document rules do change from time to time, so the date at the top of this page is worth a glance. If your distributor asked for something not listed here, let us know. It helps the next person walk in better prepared.
