After the LPG troubles of 2026, the booking gaps, the delivery delays and the long waits, a lot of families started asking the same thing: can we just get piped gas instead? With PNG, there’s no cylinder to book and no delivery to wait for. Gas comes through a pipe, a meter records what you use, and you pay a bill for it.
Getting a connection is mostly one application and one installation visit, as long as the pipeline reaches your area. Here’s the full process, from checking availability to the first flame.

First, Check Whether PNG Reaches Your Area
Piped natural gas is supplied by a City Gas Distribution (CGD) company authorised by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) for your area. Only that company can give you a connection there. Some well-known ones are IGL in Delhi NCR, MGL in Mumbai, and Gujarat Gas and Adani Total Gas in many Gujarat cities. PNGRB’s website lists the authorised company and its customer care numbers for each area.
An authorised area isn’t the same as a pipeline at your gate, though. Delhi, Mumbai and parts of Gujarat are widely covered, while many smaller cities are still being connected step by step. India had about 1.74 crore domestic PNG connections in August 2026, and the number is growing fast.
To check your own address:

- Use the company’s website or the national portal. Enter your pincode, city and area. Gujarat Gas’s registration page, for instance, tells you straight away whether your area is served.
- Look for the company’s list of covered areas. IGL, for example, publishes a list of the areas where its gas is already available.
- Ask your building society or neighbours. If a few flats in your building already have PNG, the main pipe is probably already there.
The New National Portal: MyPNG
On 1 October 2026, PNGRB launched MyPNG (mypng.gov.in), a single national portal for PNG services, along with National PNG Drive 3.0. The drive runs till 31 March 2027 and aims for 50 lakh new household connections.
Some companies have already moved their new registrations to the portal. Gujarat Gas’s own registration page now sends new applicants to MyPNG. According to news reports, the portal lets you apply, track your application and raise complaints online.
The companies’ usual channels still work too. IGL, for example, accepts new connection requests online, through its toll-free number, at walk-in centres and through authorised agents who visit homes.
Documents You’ll Need
- Identity proof, such as your Aadhaar card.
- Ownership proof for the house. IGL accepts an electricity bill, house tax receipt, sale deed or allotment letter.
- If you’re a tenant, a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the owner, or a valid rent agreement. PNGRB’s FAQ allows either, and IGL says no NOC is needed if you have a valid rent agreement with the owner.
- The registration form, filled in and signed.
Domestic PNG is only for homes, whether a flat, an independent house or a housing colony. It can’t be used for a shop or any commercial purpose.
Step by Step: From Application to First Flame
- Register on MyPNG, the company’s website, its helpline or at a customer centre.
- Submit your documents with the registration form.
- Pay the deposit. Some companies take it with the form, while IGL collects it after the site is found feasible.
- Note your BP number. Once your application is accepted, you get a Business Partner (BP) number. That’s your customer ID for everything that follows.
- Site survey. The company checks how the pipe will reach your kitchen.
- Installation. Technicians lay the pipe to your building, run a GI or copper pipe into your kitchen, and fit the meter, valves and regulator.
- Testing and conversion. The pipeline and meter are tested, your stove is converted for natural gas, and the supply is switched on.
Keep your receipt safe. Under PNGRB’s rules, the company has to give you a dated, numbered receipt acknowledging your application and deposit.

Your stove doesn’t have to go
You don’t need to buy a new stove. PNGRB’s FAQ says the company converts your existing LPG burner for natural gas free of charge. You can buy a PNG stove if you want to, but it isn’t required.
What It Costs
PNGRB’s FAQ sets the main rule. The refundable, interest-free security deposit for equipment can’t be more than ₹6,000 for a single connection, or ₹9,000 if a smart meter is fitted. That covers up to 15 metres of GI or copper pipe, not counting the rubber pipe. Extra pipe length is charged, and companies may add a gas security deposit and an application fee.
Here’s what two of the biggest companies charge:
| Company | What you pay |
|---|---|
| IGL (Delhi NCR) | ₹7,000 refundable deposit: ₹6,000 for installation and ₹1,000 towards gas consumption |
| MGL (Mumbai) | ₹6,635 in all: ₹5,000 connection deposit and ₹750 gas deposit (both refundable), plus a ₹750 application fee and ₹135 GST (not refundable) |
Other companies have similar structures, but the amounts vary by city, so check your company’s current rates before you pay.
Paying in instalments
If the deposit is a stretch, ask about instalment schemes. IGL, for example, has an EMI option for postpaid meters: you pay a non-refundable ₹275 upfront, and the ₹7,000 deposit is collected in 14 bi-monthly instalments of ₹500 from the date your gas is switched on.
Getting the deposit back
The deposit is refundable. If you ever disconnect permanently, you apply for the refund in the company’s format.
How Long It Takes
Under PNGRB’s rules, a company has to provide the connection within three months of receiving your completed application, as long as your area is covered and the needed permissions are in place. If your application isn’t feasible, it must tell you, with reasons, and return your deposit.
In practice, it’s often much quicker. Where the pipeline already runs through your building or colony, a connection can be switched on in about 7 to 15 days. In newer areas, expect to wait longer.

What Happens to Your LPG Connection
This part matters in 2026. Since a government order in March 2026, a household with PNG can’t keep a domestic LPG connection. A further amendment in May 2026 lets you apply to close your LPG connection within 30 days of getting PNG. You can either close it and take your deposit back, or take a transfer voucher that lets you restore LPG later, without a fresh deposit, if you move somewhere without piped gas.
There’s another rule worth knowing. If you live in an area where PNG is already available and the gas company writes to you inviting you to apply, your LPG supply may stop three months after that letter if you don’t apply.

Check availability first, keep your BP number and receipt safe, and plan the closure of your LPG connection as soon as the gas is switched on.
