The son gets married, and the new couple wants their own kitchen upstairs. Or the father’s old connection is still running while the son has taken one in his own name. Or there’s an Indane connection and an HP connection in the same house, because nobody ever got round to closing one. Sooner or later, a lot of Indian families ask the same question: are two gas connections in one house allowed?
The rule is “one household, one connection”. But a household isn’t the same thing as a house, and that difference decides almost every case. Here’s how it works, and what it means for your subsidy.
The Rule in One Line
IndianOil’s Citizen’s Charter, updated in September 2026, puts it plainly: only one connection is issued per household, and consumers with more than one connection should surrender the other. HP Gas says the same in its official FAQ.
This isn’t just company policy. It comes from the LPG Control Order of 2000, which is issued under the Essential Commodities Act. Under the Order, a household can’t hold more than one domestic LPG connection.
What Counts as a “Household”
The Control Order and IndianOil’s charter use the same definition: a family made up of husband, wife, unmarried children and dependent parents, living together in a dwelling unit with a common kitchen.
In plain words:
- Unmarried children count as part of their parents’ household.
- Dependent parents count as part of their children’s household.
- The kitchen is the real test. People cooking in one kitchen are one household. Separate kitchens can mean separate households.
So the question isn’t “how many people live here?” It’s “how many independent families cook separately here?”

| Situation | Connections allowed |
|---|---|
| Husband, wife and unmarried children, one kitchen | One |
| Married son’s family and his parents, all cooking in one kitchen | One |
| Married son’s family with its own separate kitchen in the same house | Can apply for a separate connection |
| Parents who aren’t dependent on their children, cooking separately | Can apply for a separate connection |
| Different families on different floors, each with its own kitchen | One each |
Two Families, One Address: Getting a Second Connection
If your family really is a separate household with its own kitchen, you can apply for your own connection, even though another family at the same address already has one. The government clarified this back in 2014: two connections at one address are allowed when the kitchens are separate.
What to expect when you apply:
- The usual new connection documents, including the KYC form.
- A declaration that you’re an independent household, that you cook in a separate kitchen, and that nobody in your household already has a connection.
- A visit from the distributor. Distributors may physically verify such claims, so don’t be surprised if someone comes to see the kitchen.
Be honest on the form. IndianOil’s charter says that if any information given by the consumer is found to be incorrect, the connection will be cancelled.
How Duplicate Connections Get Caught
Many families assume a second connection in a different name, or from a different company, will go unnoticed. These days, it usually doesn’t.
- Cross-company checks. The oil companies run de-duplication checks within and across companies, so an Indane connection and an HP connection in the same household can be matched.
- A common database. The government’s Common LPG Database Platform compares connections using Aadhaar numbers, bank details and ration cards.
- Biometric Aadhaar authentication. According to the petroleum ministry, the biometric check, needed from 1 October 2026 to book refills at the subsidised rate, removes duplicate and ineligible connections.
The scale is big. The government told the Rajya Sabha in August 2025 that over 4.08 crore connections had been blocked, suspended or deactivated for duplication or ineligibility, as of 1 July 2025.
What It Means for Your Subsidy
IndianOil’s charter is clear that one household is entitled to only one subsidised domestic LPG connection. A second connection doesn’t bring a second subsidy. Here’s how that plays out today:
- The regulated price. For most families, this is the real benefit now, since the cash subsidy for general consumers has been nil in most of India since 2020. From 1 October 2026, the regulated price needs biometric Aadhaar authentication. A connection without it still gets LPG, but at the market price, without any subsidy.
- Ujjwala. A household that already has any LPG connection isn’t eligible for a PMUY connection. And an Ujjwala household shouldn’t be holding a second connection on the side.
- Blocked connections. If a duplicate is flagged, the extra connection can be blocked, and getting it sorted means paperwork and trips to the distributor.
In short, a second connection in the same household adds risk, not benefit.
PNG and LPG Together: Not Allowed
If your house has piped natural gas (PNG), the rule is stricter. Since an amendment to the Control Order in March 2026, a household with a PNG connection can’t keep or take a domestic LPG connection.
A further amendment in May 2026 made the switch easier. You can apply to terminate your LPG connection within 30 days of getting PNG, and take a transfer voucher that lets you restore LPG later if you move to an area without piped gas.
Common Situations, Sorted
“Father’s connection is still running, and I took a new one too”
If you all cook in one kitchen, that’s two connections in one household. Keep one, surrender the other and collect its deposit refund. If the one you keep is in the name of a parent who has passed away, get it transferred to a family member.
“The connection at my parents’ place is in my name, but I’ve moved after marriage”
Transfer it to a parent who lives there, rather than leaving it in your name. HP Gas, for example, allows transfers within the family to close relatives, including a father or mother. It also keeps things clean if you ever need a connection in your own name at your new home.
“I work in another city, and my family has a connection back home”
The 5 kg FTL cylinder is the simplest option. IndianOil says its Chhotu cylinder was launched especially for migrants who don’t have local address proof, and you need only an identity proof to buy one. If you want a regular connection there, discuss your case with the local distributor before applying.
“We just need two cylinders, not two connections”
Then you don’t need a second connection. Ask your distributor for an additional cylinder on your existing connection, usually called a double bottle connection (DBC). It gives you a spare at home without breaking any rule.
Got a “Multiple Connection” Notice?
HP Gas’s FAQ covers exactly this situation. Here’s what it advises:
- If you really do have two, surrender the extra one at the distributor. You get back the deposit written on its Subscription Voucher.
- Want two cylinders? Ask for a second cylinder on the connection you keep, if you don’t already have one.
- If you’ve been flagged wrongly, because yours is a separate household, submit a KYC form with ID and address proof showing that the households are different.
Keep the acknowledgement or receipt from whichever step you take.
Quick Answers
Can two families in one house have separate gas connections?
Yes, if each is an independent household with its own kitchen. Expect a declaration and a check by the distributor.
Can husband and wife have separate connections?
Not if they live together and share a kitchen. They’re one household.
Can one house have an Indane and an HP connection?
Not for the same household. Companies cross-check, and the extra one should be surrendered.
Will both connections get subsidy?
No. One household is entitled to only one subsidised domestic connection.
Can I keep LPG after getting PNG?
No. Since March 2026, households with PNG can’t keep a domestic LPG connection.
One Kitchen, One Connection
The easiest way to remember the rule is to count kitchens, not people or names. One family cooking in one kitchen gets one connection. A genuinely separate family with its own kitchen can get its own, even at the same address. If your house has more connections than kitchens, sort it out at the distributor before a de-duplication check does it for you.
IndianOil’s Citizen’s Charter sets out the household definition and the one-connection rule. If your family’s arrangement doesn’t fit any of the cases above, write to us with the details, and we’ll try to work out where you stand.
