Most people find out their gas connection has an old phone number at the worst possible moment. The WhatsApp booking chat says the number isn’t registered. The delivery code goes to a phone lying dead in a drawer. Or the delivery person turns up at the flat you left two years ago.
Your registered mobile number and address are two small details on your connection, but a lot depends on them now. Updating both is simple, and this guide shows you how to do it for Indane, HP Gas and Bharat Gas.

Why These Two Details Matter
Your registered mobile number

- Booking. WhatsApp, IVRS and missed call booking recognise you by your registered number. When IndianOil launched its common booking number, it said Indane booking can be done from the registered mobile number only.
- Delivery. The delivery code (DAC) is sent to your registered number. IndianOil’s Citizen’s Charter asks you to share it with the delivery person after you receive the cylinder. If the code goes to a number you no longer use, the delivery can get stuck at your door.
- Updates. Booking confirmations and other messages from your gas company go to the same number.
Your registered address
- Delivery goes to the address on your connection.
- It’s a rule. IndianOil’s charter says any change of address must be reported to the distributor immediately.
- Insurance. The oil companies’ LPG accident insurance covers the customer’s registered premises, meaning the address on your connection.
Keep These Ready
- Your consumer number. It’s on your cash memo, invoice and Subscription Voucher. Indane’s is a 16-digit number starting with 7.
- The connection holder’s ID proof, usually Aadhaar.
- The new number, active and able to receive SMS, since online changes are confirmed with an OTP.
- The old number too, if you still have it. It makes the online routes easier.
One check before you begin: is the connection still in the right name? If the holder has passed away, get the name changed first. Updating the details on a connection in the wrong name only causes trouble later.
How to Update Your Mobile Number
Indane
- By IVRS. Call the Indane booking number, 77189 55555, from the number you want to register. If that number isn’t in Indane’s records, IndianOil says you can register it once by entering your 16-digit consumer ID, followed by an authentication step in the same call.
- In the app. Log in to the IndianOil ONE app and check your profile for the option to change your mobile number.
- At the distributor. If the online routes don’t work, visit your distributor with your consumer number and ID proof, and give a written request with the new number.
HP Gas
- First-time registration has to be done at the distributor. According to HP Gas, you give a written application with your ID proof and connection details, a rule meant to stop misuse of mobile registration.
- Changing an existing number can be done through HP Gas’s IVRS or its customer portal, myhpgas.in. The change is verified with an OTP.
- At your door. HP Gas delivery staff use an app called Vitaran, which HP says can update KYC details, including your registered mobile number. Ask when your next cylinder arrives.
Bharat Gas
Bharat Petroleum has listed two ways to do it:
- HelloBPCL app: go to Services and choose Update Registered Mobile Number.
- Website: on my.ebharatgas.com, choose Update Contact Number and complete the verification.
Your distributor can also update it at the counter.

If the OTP doesn’t arrive
Check that the SIM is active and has signal, and look in your SMS spam or blocked folder, since some phones filter these messages. If it still doesn’t come after a couple of tries, stop retrying and use the distributor route instead.
If the old number is lost, or it was never yours
Online changes depend on OTPs, so they get stuck when the old number is gone, or when it belongs to a relative, a previous tenant or someone you can’t reach. In all these cases, go to the distributor. Take your consumer number, the connection holder’s ID proof and, if you have it, the Subscription Voucher. Ask for an acknowledgement of your request.
Your Gas Number vs Your Aadhaar Number
This confuses a lot of people, so it’s worth spelling out. There are two different mobile numbers involved:
| Number | Used for | Where to change it |
|---|---|---|
| Registered with your gas company | Booking, delivery code, booking messages | Gas company app, website, IVRS or distributor |
| Linked to your Aadhaar | The OTP during eKYC and other Aadhaar checks | An Aadhaar enrolment centre |
Updating one doesn’t change the other. If your eKYC OTP isn’t arriving, changing your gas-registered number won’t help. Your gas distributor can’t change your Aadhaar-linked number either.
How to Update Your Address
You’ve moved within the same distributor’s area
This is a simple update, not a transfer. IndianOil’s charter says that if your new home falls within your current distributor’s service area, the registered address will be updated. Tell your distributor, and take proof of the new address, such as a rent agreement, a utility bill or an updated Aadhaar.
Do it before your next booking. Otherwise, the cylinder heads to your old address.
The address has a mistake in it
A wrong flat number, a missing block or a house number that changed after renumbering is fixed the same way. While you’re at the counter, ask them to add a landmark if your house is hard to find. Delivery staff will thank you.
You’ve moved to another distributor’s area
Then it’s a transfer, not an address update. Within the same city, your distributor issues a transfer authorisation, and you keep your cylinder and regulator. For a move to another city, you surrender the equipment and take a Termination Voucher to reconnect there.
Watch Out for “Update Your Number” Scams
Every change that involves an OTP attracts fraudsters. A caller may claim your connection will be blocked unless you “update KYC” right now, or send you a link to an app. Keep it simple:
- Update your details only through the official app, website, IVRS or your distributor.
- Never share an OTP with anyone who calls you.
- Never install an app from a link sent by SMS or WhatsApp. Use the official app store.
Quick Answers
How do I change the mobile number on my gas connection?
Indane: IVRS, the IndianOil ONE app or the distributor. HP Gas: IVRS or myhpgas.in, or the distributor for a first-time registration. Bharat Gas: the HelloBPCL app or my.ebharatgas.com.
My old number is lost. Can I still change it?
Yes. Visit your distributor with your consumer number and the connection holder’s ID proof.
Is the eKYC OTP sent to my gas-registered number?
No. It goes to the number linked to your Aadhaar.
I moved within the same area. Do I need a transfer?
No. Just ask the distributor to update your address, with proof of the new one.
How do I know the new number has been updated?
Check the profile in your company’s app, or send “Hi” to its WhatsApp booking number from the new phone. If it recognises you, the update has gone through.
Check Both Before Your Next Booking
Open your gas company’s app today and look at two things: the mobile number and the address. If both are right, you’re done. If either is out of date, fix it now, while the cylinder in your kitchen still has gas, rather than on the day the booking fails or the delivery goes to the wrong door.
